| Prehistoric Irish gold 'came from the Mournes' |
Much of Ireland's prehistoric gold is likely to have been sourced from the Mourne Mountains, a study has indicated.
Centuries of speculation led scientists to carry out research into the possible source of the precious metal used by craftsmen, the Irish Times reports.
They examined more than 400 gold objects, panned for gold and extracted it from rocks by fire in a bid to discover its origins.
After 14 years of study, the report concluded that much of the items are likely to have been made from metal found in the mountains.
There is "solid evidence that the Irish early Bronze Age ornaments were not only made of Irish gold but probably of gold from County Down's Mourne Mountains", it stated.
Last month, the Press and Journal of Scotland revealed that a number of items of gold jewellery had been discovered in the area of Moray, including a pair of rings thought to date from the fifth and 12th centuries.

| "Special" gold coin sells for more than $1m |
A gold coin that was sold at a recent US auction has been hailed as "special".
Writing for Numismatic News, Greg Reynolds noted that the 1856-O double eagle coin - which was acquired for $1,437,500 (£872,932) at a Heritage auction at the Long Beach Coin, Stamp and Collectible Expo in May - is one of a kind.
It is the only 1856-O gold $20 piece that graded above -60, he explained, adding that no other coin from the New Orleans Mint has fetched above $1 million at a public auction.
"This 1856-O is a coin of such importance, however, that it is very difficult to put a price tag on it," Mr Reynolds stated.
He also revealed that the previous record price for a coin of this type was $576,150.
Meanwhile, Gladstone Jewellery has revealed that it has donated an 18-c gold brooch to be auctioned for charity at the Coutts London Jewellery Week.
